Why You Should Set a Q4 Goal at Work

Q4-goal-setting

Who says goals are just for the new year? The end of the year brings a time to hone in on what you want to achieve. While Q4 is full of work deadlines, holidays, travel, and events, it’s also a great time to center yourself before 2020. January will be here in a blink of an eye, so let’s focus and get serious about Q4 goals to help close out the year strong.

1. Re-visit beginning of year goals

Dust off the notebook that you made a list in nine months ago because it is time to recommit! Re-visiting goals aren’t about rushing everything into 12 weeks, it’s about re-thinking and transforming these goals to work for you given where you are in your professional and personal life right now. Some goals have likely been checked off, others no longer make sense, and some are still feasible- meaning instead of being disappointed in what you haven't done, use the list as motivation for what you can still achieve. Q4 provides the perfect amount of time that allows for space to complete goals while being short enough to not be able to say “I’ll do it another week.”

2. Set Yourself Up For the New Year

Why wait until January 1 to start acting upon your goals? Q4 is a great time to lay the groundwork for new things you want to put in motion in 2020. It's important to pre-plan now so you can hit the ground running. Start writing out two big goals and plan back from there. Say you want a promotion by mid-year. What can you do in Q4 to ensure a strong end of year review? You’ll want actionable items to prove that you are deserving of that new position. Or, say you want to improve office culture. Send out surveys on what people are looking for or plan a test event to gauge interest. These small steps will pay off in the new year when it comes to launching something that you've wanted.

3. Focus on Something Small

At the beginning of the year, it's easy to get carried away and set huge goals that may not always be achievable (or sometimes life just “happens”). A small goal helps you take those productive steps without massively shifting anything if your life. Some great small goal ideas for Q4 include creating a personal budget, organizing your space, trying new productivity methods, or taking steps towards better work-life balance, such as leaving right at 5 one day a week.

Closing out Q4 isn’t only important fiscally, but also for your personal and professional growth and development. Sometimes, it feels like there are so many barriers to achieving your goals. Not enough time. Too many distractions. Ensure that your workspace is conducive to getting things done.
